How the quiz and mastery score work

This tool runs entirely in your browser using a curated word bank of common ESL vocabulary tagged by CEFR level (A2 to C1). When you start a quiz, the script shuffles the bank, filters it to the level you chose, and builds each question by pairing the target word with three distractors — wrong answers drawn from other words at a similar level so the choices are plausible, not obvious.

Two question types are supported. In Word → meaning, you see an English word and pick its definition. In Meaning → word, the prompt and options are swapped, which trains active recall — the harder, more durable direction for memory.

Your mastery score is the headline number. It is not a raw percentage; it rewards consistency. The formula is:

mastery = round( (correct / answered) × 100 × streakFactor ), where streakFactor = 1 + min(currentStreak, 5) × 0.04.

So accuracy sets the base, and an unbroken run of right answers can lift the score by up to 20%, capped at 100. A single wrong answer resets the streak factor to 1, which is why a careful, steady pace beats fast guessing. The progress bar visualizes the same value. Answers are colour-coded the instant you click — green for the correct choice, red for a mistake — and the correct option is always revealed so a wrong guess still teaches you the word. Nothing is sent to a server, so you can practise as many rounds as you like, offline, with no sign-up.

Use it for a daily five-minute warm-up before reading or writing in English. Repetition across sessions is what moves a word from recognition into real, usable vocabulary.
