Clear English grammar, free for every learner
English Learner helps people who are learning English as a second language understand the rules and use them with confidence. Every lesson and tool is free. You need no account.
Our mission
Good grammar help should not depend on money or on where you live. Our mission is to give every learner short, correct and friendly explanations, with practice that shows at once what you got right and what to fix.
Who this site is for
- Adults and teenagers who study English on their own, from beginner to upper intermediate (A1 to B2).
- Learners who want to find their level first and then study the right topics.
- Teachers who need a free lesson or quiz to share with a class.
We write in plain English with short sentences, because many readers use English as their second or third language.
Our quality standard
- Each lesson teaches one grammar point. It gives the rule, real examples, common mistakes and a quiz with a short reason for every answer.
- Every new lesson goes through a separate review step before it goes live. The review looks for wrong rules, unclear examples and quiz questions with more than one possible answer.
- Where British and American English differ, the lesson says so.
- The checker tools are tested on sets of typical learner sentences before they are listed. When a tool is not sure, it says so. It does not guess.
- Quiz answers stay in your browser. We do not collect what you type.
- When a reader reports a mistake, we check it and correct the page.
Who runs this site
The site is built and maintained by Michael Lip, an independent software developer. His other projects are listed at zovo.one.
English Learner is not a school. It does not employ teachers, it does not give certificates and it is not an exam board.
What you will find here
- Grammar lessons. Each lesson covers one point with rules, examples, common mistakes and a quiz.
- Practice tools. Quizzes and reference lists that run in your browser.
- A level test that gives a rough CEFR level.
Written with help from AI tools
Lessons and quiz questions are written with the help of AI tools. They cover standard, widely taught English grammar. Where British and American English differ, the lesson says so.
We try hard to make every rule and every example correct. Mistakes are still possible. If you find one, please tell us so that it can be corrected.
The level test and the quizzes are for practice. Their results are a guide only. They are not official exam scores.
How the site is paid for
The site is free to use. Michael pays for the domain and does the work himself. The site may show ads from Google AdSense after Google approves it. The privacy policy explains how the ads work and how to turn them off.
Tips from readers help cover the domain and the hours. The site stays free either way. How tips help
