Cambridge English Scale score converter

Type a Cambridge English Scale score and choose your exam. You get the grade and the CEFR level from the official Cambridge tables, and what the same score means on all five exams. You can also turn the marks of an official Cambridge practice test into a scale range.

The overall score is on your Statement of Results.

Practice test marks to a scale range

For official Cambridge practice tests only. Cambridge publishes four marks for each paper. The tool shows the scale range that your mark falls in, and the overall range from the average of the papers.

Choose an exam, enter a mark for each paper and press Estimate range.

How the converter works

The method

The converter looks up your score in the official Cambridge English results tables for the exam you choose. It also shows what the same score means on each of the five exams. Each grade and CEFR level in the score converter comes from those tables. The practice section is different. It gives an estimated range, not an exact score. When a score falls outside the reported band for your exam, the tool says so instead of inventing a grade.

Scores on the Cambridge English Scale

Cambridge reports A2 Key to C2 Proficiency results on the Cambridge English Scale. You get a separate score for each skill, and the average of the skill scores gives the overall result. This converter uses the overall score. A2 Key, B1 Preliminary and B2 First use the same tables for their for Schools versions.

Practice test marks

The Cambridge guide Converting practice test scores to Cambridge English Scale scores (November 2023) gives four marks for each paper of the official practice tests. Each mark is the practice test mark that gives that Cambridge English Scale score. The lowest one is the minimum score that the exam reports. For a mark between two published marks, the tool shows a range. The range starts at the lower published score and stops one point below the next published score. The overall score is the average of the paper scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. The guide says that the tables apply only to official Cambridge practice tests, that they do not predict a precise live exam score, and that scores within about three points of a level boundary need care.

Scores with no grade and no certificate

A pass is Grade A, B or C. Some scores below a pass still get a certificate at a lower CEFR level. Cambridge also reports a lower band of scores with no grade, no CEFR level and no certificate. A2 Key reports 80 to 99, B1 Preliminary 102 to 119, B2 First 122 to 139, C1 Advanced 142 to 159, and C2 Proficiency 162 to 179. The converter tells you when your score is in this band. Scores outside the reported band for the exam are not reported at all.

For A2 Key, two official sources disagree. The results page gives 80 to 99. The A2 Key Statement of Results factsheet (May 2026) says that scores below 82 are not reported, and the practice-test guide also gives 82 as the minimum. For 80 and 81 on A2 Key, the converter shows this difference and gives no result.

The same score means different things per exam

The scale runs across exams, so a score can mean pass at one exam and below pass at the next. A 160 is Grade A at B1 Preliminary, Grade C at B2 First and Level B2 at C1 Advanced. Always convert with the exam you actually took.

Limits

The score converter uses overall scores. The practice section gives a range from the four published marks for each paper, not an exact score, and it works only for official Cambridge practice tests. The tool does not convert the skill scores of a live exam, and it is not an official Cambridge tool. For your official result, check your Statement of Results. The score tables come from the Cambridge English results page. Cambridge also has its own Cambridge English Scale score converter.

Who made this tool

Michael Lip built this tool. He is an independent software developer and runs English Learner (see About). English Learner is not a school, and it is not an exam board. The tables on this page were taken from the Cambridge pages linked above and checked on 20 October 2026. Before publication, the result for every whole score from 80 to 230 on each of the five exams was checked against the official table. If you find a mistake, tell us through the Contact page.
